AWF National Junior & Under 23 Championships
Dear State Members,
As predictions on the spread of the COVID-19 virus become more alarming every day, I’d like to update you on the AWF’s current plans in regard to the 2020 AWF National Junior & Under 23 Championships. Entries for this competition close soon and we realise that State Members will be uncertain about making travel and accommodation bookings for their teams in case of cancellations. According to the latest reports on COVID-19 in Australia, what happens in the next few weeks will indicate just how bad things will get. With this in mind, we will continue to monitor the situation daily and confirm the status of the event no later than Thursday 9th April. If the event can continue as planned, that will give everyone five weeks to finalise their arrangements. If the championships cannot go ahead as a single event, we will propose an alternate format.
If the championships cannot safely be conducted with all participants in one place, it will become an “email competition”. Each State Member will be asked to conduct a competition for entrants within their own state or territory on the weekend of 15th – 17th May and email the results to the AWF. The AWF will still provide event T-shirts, medals and trophies and will assist State Members to run their event locally by returning a portion of the entry fees collected from each state’s athletes to the relevant State Member. In this case, the AWF will determine the cost of T-shirts, medals, trophies and postage, and calculate the balance to be returned to State Members on a per-capita basis according to their entries.
