Birmingham 2022 Weightlifting Athlete Allocation System Released

Dec 12 2020

On 11th December 2020 the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) released the Weightlifting Athlete Allocation System for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The B2022 weightlifting qualification system is similar to the system implemented for the previous Commonwealth Games held at the Gold Coast in 2018 but for the first time, the CGF has introduced quota-reduction penalties for nations that record anti-doping rule violations during the B2022 qualification period.

During the ranking period of 01 January 2021 – 14 February 2022 the maximum number of athletes by CGA will be reduced by one (1) if any weightlifting athlete and/or athlete support personnel (regardless of whether such athlete appears, or not, on the IWF Commonwealth Ranking List) from that CGA records an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) through testing or investigation conducted by the Independent Testing Agency (ITA) and/or any other WADA approved Anti-Doping Organization. If there are multiple ADRV’s recorded by weightlifting athletes and/or weightlifting athlete support personnel during the ranking period of 01 January 2021 – 14 February 2022 the maximum number of athletes by CGA for the relevant CGA will be reduced by the same number as the number of ADRV’s.

Additionally, if four (4) or more violations of the IWF’s Anti-Doping Rules as sanctioned by the IWF and/or an Anti-Doping Organization other than the Member Federation or its National Anti-Doping Organization are recorded against an IWF Member Federation within a 12 month period, (regardless of whether such athlete appears, or not, on the IWF Commonwealth Ranking List) under the terms of the IWF’s Anti-Doping Rules, the case of the relevant IWF Member Federation will be referred to the Independent Member Federations Sanctioning Panel (Independent Panel). The Independent Panel has the jurisdiction to impose sanctions in accordance with Article 12 of the IWF’s Anti-Doping Rule further penalties. In the case of a CGA/athlete becoming ineligible to accept a qualification slot(s) as a result of an ADRV or sanctions imposed by the Independent Panel in line with the IWF’s Anti-Doping Rules the respective slots shall be reallocated in accordance with the Reallocation of Unused Qualification slots process.
