Australians are Virtually Ready to take on the World

Australian weightlifters Eileen Cikamatana and Matthew Lydement will join 120 athletes representing 32 countries to contest the 1st Uzbekistan Online Cup this weekend.

Organised by the Uzbekistan Weightlifting Federation with the assistance of the IWF, the competition will be broadcast live on the IWF YouTube channel, commencing at 10:00am AEST on Friday 28th August.

It’s weightlifting, but not as we know it. Each competitor will be lifting in their home country and they’ll be linked together in real time via Zoom. In some cases, the athletes have been grouped according to their time zone, rather than the entry total.

In addition to the two Aussie lifters who were invited to compete, Australian Technical Officials Pedro Sanchez, Phil Maunder and Lilly Coffa will be heavily involved, as will the AWF’s IT Manager Bowen Stuart, working together, although thousands of kilometres apart, with the IWF IT Manager Zoltan Veres, keeping everything running smoothly.

Eileen will be dialling-in from Canberra to compete in the Women’s 81kg category at 4:00pm on Friday. Matthew is connecting from Brisbane on Saturday 29th August at 11:00am for the Men’s 109kg session.

The compeition will be live on the IWF YouTube Channel
